They’re chasing an audience when they actually need 10 people, one specific question, and seven days. The strategy isn’t complicated. The execution is — but not for the reason you think. This is the route, and the unspoken thing that’s keeping you stuck right before it.

Subscribe now

Why everyone gets this backwards

Here’s the script most people follow when they try to start something online:

Build the audience. Then build the trust. Then build the product. Then sell.

Four stages. Years of work. And the worst part — when you finally get to “sell,” you’re selling to people who barely know you, because the audience you built is full of strangers who liked one post and never came back.

You start trust from zero. Then, after you’ve done all that work, you start trust from zero again — with the people you’re now asking to buy.

That’s the trap. Not laziness, not lack of skill. Just a strategy that bakes the hardest part — building trust at scale — into the start of the journey, instead of skipping it entirely.

There’s another route. It’s shorter. It’s less glamorous. And it works.
<div class="comment" data-attrs="{"url":"https://open.substack.com/","commentId":260371224,"comment":{"id":260371224,"date":"2026-05-25T14:30:00.660Z","edited_at":null,"body":"If you want your first $1,000 online — no audience required — do these 5 in order:\n\n\t1.\tList 10 people who already trust you. It will feel too small. That’s the point.

1. List 10 people who already trust you.

Not followers. Not subscribers. People who would reply to your message within 24 hours. Former colleagues, friends who’ve asked you for help, the three people who keep DMing you the same kind of question. That’s your launch list. Ten is enough. Ten is more than enough.

2. Find the question they ask you for free.

What do those ten people come to you for? Not what you think you should sell. What do they actually ask? The recurring question — the one you answer in a voice note while making coffee — is the product. You don’t have to invent demand. You already have it. You’ve just been giving the answer away because it felt too small to charge for.

3. Make the small version.

A document. A 40-minute live workshop. A 12-page PDF. Not a course. Not a five-module signature program. Not a membership. The small version. Whatever you can build in a weekend.

4. Price it where a yes is easy.

$27 to $97. Low enough that “yes” doesn’t require a meeting with their accountant. High enough that the people who buy are serious. This is not your final price. This is your proof price. You’ll raise it later. Right now you need ten yeses, not a finished business model.

5. Sell it this week. To those 10. Before it’s “ready.”

Not next month. Not when the sales page is done. Not when you’ve redesigned the logo. This week. To those ten people. While the thing is still a draft.

That’s it. That’s the whole route.

Ten people × $97 = $970. One yes from someone outside that ten, and you’ve crossed $1,000.

The math is embarrassingly simple. The execution is where everyone falls apart — and not for the reason they think.

I built a full self-paced version of this whole play — the script, the templates, the workshop slides, the sales emails — for people who want to run it in a week without guessing. It’s called 10K Launch Lab. But you don’t need it to start. The 5 steps above are the entire spine.

So why won’t you actually do it?

If the steps are this clear, why isn’t everyone at $1,000+?

Because the steps aren’t the problem. The minute between reading the steps and doing them is the problem. And in that minute, something very specific happens in your brain.

I get asked a version of this constantly. One reader asked me last week how I push through resistance. Another said she’d spent a month — not a week, a month — procrastinating on the about page of her launch. Every procrastination strategy already tried. Nothing working.
<div class="community-post" data-attrs="{"url":"https://open.substack.com/chat/posts/9f14c22f-2914-451b-84a5-cf753b59c1c9?utm_source=thread_embed","postId":"9f14c22f-2914-451b-84a5-cf753b59c1c9","communityPost":null,"author":{"id":263185557,"name":"Ana Calin","handle":"theanacalin","previous_name":null,"photo_url":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/571a8b69-320b-4df6-ba84-dd1394fb5af1_864x864.png","bio":"God. You’re procrastinating because the path is too short.

Read that again. The plan is five steps, doable in a week. That feels wrong. It can’t be that simple. Real businesses take longer than this. So your brain — trying to protect you from looking foolish — quietly starts adding steps. I should probably build a landing page first. I need a logo. The about page has to be perfect. I should write 30 more posts before I sell anything.

Every step you add is a delay disguised as professionalism.

The about page sitting untouched for a month isn’t a writing problem. It’s a decision problem. As long as the about page isn’t done, you can’t launch. As long as you can’t launch, you can’t be rejected. As long as you can’t be rejected, the dream stays intact.

Procrastination is rarely about the task. It’s almost always about what happens after the task is done.

How to start before you feel ready

The most useful reframe I’ve found is this:

stop trying to feel ready. Ready is not a feeling that arrives. Ready is a thing you confer on yourself by acting before it shows up.

Three things that work, in the order I’d use them:

Shrink the next step until it’s almost insulting. Not “launch the workshop.” Not even “finish the about page.” Just: open the document and write one sentence. The reason this works isn’t motivation. It’s that the smaller the step, the smaller the threat. You’re not bypassing fear. You’re making the action too small for fear to bother showing up.

Tell one specific person, by name, what you’ll do today. Not your audience. Not your stories. One actual human. The accountability has to be specific enough that vagueness can’t save you.

Move before the doubt finishes its sentence. Doubt is fast. Faster than thinking. The only thing faster than doubt is movement that starts before doubt has fully formed its argument. Open the laptop. Send the message. Hit publish. The conversation with yourself about whether to do it is exactly the conversation you’re going to lose, because the inside of your head is doubt’s home turf.

<picture><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!FbqR!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4e773828-7fe7-4fac-949a-2a10fe056429_1376x768.jpeg" width="1376" height="768" data-attrs="{"src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/4e773828-7fe7-4fac-949a-2a10fe056429_1376x768.jpeg","srcNoWatermark":null,"fullscreen":null,"imageSize":null,"height":768,"width":1376,"resizeWidth":null,"bytes":498269,"alt":"A flat-lay or simple graphic of 10 names on a list with a checkmark next to one — But you don’t need it for step one. Step one is asking the question.)

“How do I position my offer?” — Clarity and simplicity. Who is it for. Why they need it. How it works. Three sentences. If you can’t write those three sentences, the problem isn’t your copywriting — it’s that the offer itself isn’t clear yet.

“How do I grow as a writer, not a business?” — Same five steps. Writers also have a recurring question — usually “how do you write like that?” or “how do I start?” — and that’s a product. The route doesn’t change because you write essays instead of selling templates. (I broke down the writer-specific version in First 100 Paid Subscribers.)

What this all really comes down to

You don’t need an audience. More talented. More qualified. Better writers. Better speakers.

They make zero dollars online.

Meanwhile, I make $50K/month working about 2 hours a day — because I figured out how to monetize my expertise instead of giving it away for free.

That gap used to confuse me. I’d get on calls with people who had EVERYTHING — the skills, the knowledge, the audience, even a small following — and they’d tell me: “I just don’t know what to sell.”

And I’d sit there thinking: you know more than most people will ever learn in a lifetime, and you can’t figure out how to charge for it?

Then I realized.

The problem was never the knowledge. It was never the platform. It was never the algorithm, the timing, the niche, or the “market.”

The problem is a gap I now call the Clarity Gap.

And once I understood it, everything changed — not just for me, but for every creator I’ve worked with since.

The Clarity Gap: Why Smart People Can't Monetize Their Expertise.

Here’s what I mean.

Most people who want to build something online are stuck in one of three places:

Place 1: “I don’t know what to sell.”

They have expertise but can’t package it.

They overthink the format (Should it be a course? A coaching offer? An ebook? A membership?).

They research for months.

They buy templates.

They watch 47 YouTube videos on “how to create a digital product.”

They never launch.

Place 2: “I don’t know who would pay for this.”

They have an idea but no confidence anyone wants it.

They look at other creators and think “that’s already been done.”

They assume they need thousands of followers before anyone will trust them enough to buy.

So they keep posting content for free, hoping the money will eventually follow the audience.
<div class="digest-post-embed" data-attrs="{"nodeId":"ad75b136-d215-4829-a475-623c1c54c83d","caption":"She had at least ten things she could teach.","cta":"Read full story","showBylines":true,"size":"sm","isEditorNode":true,"title":"The $97 Smoke Test: Why Smart Creators Launch Small Before They Launch Big","publishedBylines":[{"id":263185557,"name":"Ana Calin","bio":"God. Eight months of tweaking fonts and rewriting module titles and redesigning the logo and asking friends for feedback.

Zero sales.

Meanwhile, someone else with a Google Doc, a Stripe link, and a clear promise made $2,400 in 48 hours.

Perfection is procrastination wearing a nice outfit.

The Shortest Path to Your First $1,000 Online

So what do you actually do?

I’ll give you the free version, which is already more than most people need.

The problem most people have is they’re trying to sell something they want to create instead of something people want to buy.

The fix is embarrassingly simple:

Step 1: Talk to 10 people in your audience.

Not a survey. Not a poll. Actual conversations. DMs, emails, voice notes — whatever. Ask them: “What’s the one thing you’re struggling with right now that you’d pay to fix this week?”

Listen to their words. Write them down. Use their language, not yours.

Step 2: Find the pattern.

After 10 conversations, you’ll notice 2–3 problems that keep coming up. One of them will feel obvious and boring to you. That’s the one. The one that feels obvious to you is the one that feels urgent to them. That’s the gap where money lives.

Step 3: Build the smallest possible solution.

Not a 12-module course. Not a 200-page ebook. A workshop. A template. A 5-email system. A 90-minute live session. Something you can build in a weekend and sell on Monday.

Step 4: Tell them it exists.

Send one email. Post one Note. Tell your list: “I built this thing that solves [the problem you told me about]. Here it is. It’s [price]. Here’s the link.”

That’s it.

That’s the system that took me from zero to my first $1,000 day. From my first $1,000 day to my first $10,000 month. From my first $10,000 month to $50,000 months that happen while I’m breastfeeding at 3 AM.

Not a funnel. Not an ads strategy. Not a mastermind.

Conversations → clarity → a simple offer → one email.

Everything after that is just doing it again. Better each time.

Why Most People Never Build an Online Business (And How to Be Different)

I can give you the steps. I just did.

Most people won’t do them.

Not because the steps are hard. They’re not. A 10-year-old could follow them.

People won’t do them because Step 1 requires talking to people (scary). Step 3 requires shipping something imperfect (terrifying). Step 4 requires asking for money (existentially threatening, apparently).

And so they go back to “researching.” Back to consuming content. Back to the safe, warm comfort of preparing without ever doing.

I get it. I lived there for years. I had a corporate career that paid well and felt empty, and I spent two years “exploring” before I shipped anything.

The day I shipped something ugly to 10 subscribers was the day my life changed.

Not because the product was good. It wasn’t.

Because I crossed the line from “thinking about building” to “building.”

That’s the only line that matters.

How to Build an Online Business From Scratch in 30 Days.

I get asked this all the time. Usually more.

The reason they can’t see it is because the thing that’s valuable about them feels ordinary to them. They’ve been doing it for so long that it doesn’t feel like a skill anymore. It feels like breathing.

A marketing director doesn’t think “I know how to position a brand” is special because she’s done it a thousand times. It’s just... what she does.

A project manager doesn’t think “I know how to take a chaotic situation and turn it into a clear plan with deadlines” is worth money because that’s literally just Tuesday for her.

A finance analyst doesn’t think “I can read a P&L and tell you exactly where you’re bleeding money” is a product. It’s just how her brain works.

But here’s what they don’t see:

There are millions of people who would pay $400, $4,000, or $40,000 to learn how to do the thing they do on autopilot.

The creator who’s launching a product and has no idea how to position it? Your career gave you at least one of these. Probably two or three.

Type 1: The Process You Automated

At some point in your career, you took a messy, manual, painful process and made it smooth. Maybe you built a system for onboarding clients. Maybe you created a template that saved your team 10 hours a week. Maybe you figured out how to do in 30 minutes what everyone else took 3 hours to do.

That process is a product.

Not the corporate version of it. The simplified, “here’s how a solopreneur or small team can do this” version. Strip out the corporate jargon, the 47 stakeholders, and the 12-week timeline. What’s left is a template, a system, or a mini course that someone will pay for immediately.

Type 2: The Mistake You Stopped Making

You made an expensive mistake early in your career. Cost the company money, or time, or a client. You figured out what went wrong. You built a process or a framework or a mental model that made sure it never happened again.

That mistake — and the fix — is a product.

Because someone right now is about to make the same mistake. And they’d pay to skip the painful lesson you already learned. “How I Lost a $50K Client and What I Changed So It Never Happened Again” is worth more than any certification course.

Type 3: The Translation Skill

You can take something complex and explain it simply. You’re the person in the meeting who says “so what you’re really saying is...” and suddenly everyone nods. You translate between departments, between technical and non-technical, between strategy and execution.

That translation ability is a product.

Every industry has a knowledge gap between experts and everyone else. If you can bridge that gap — in writing, in a course, in a template — you have an offer that never runs out of demand.

Type 4: The Decision Framework

You’ve developed a way of making decisions that other people struggle with. How to prioritise when everything feels urgent. How to evaluate vendors. How to choose between two strategies. How to know when to kill a project.

You probably don’t even think of it as a “framework.” It’s just how you think.

But if you wrote it down — step 1, step 2, step 3, here’s how I decide — that’s a product. Decision frameworks are some of the highest-converting offers in the creator economy because they solve the most universal problem: “I don’t know what to do next.”

Type 5: The Rolodex Shortcut

You know which tools to use. Which platforms are worth it. Which vendors are reliable. Which approach works for which situation. You’ve spent years testing and filtering and curating so you don’t waste time on the wrong things anymore.

That curated knowledge is a product.

“The 7 Tools I Actually Use to Run a $X Business” or “My Vendor Evaluation Checklist (After Testing 30+ Options)” sounds simple. It sells because it saves months of trial and error.

Subscribe now

Why Most People Still Won’t Build It

You’ve just read those 5 types. Something probably clicked. You probably thought “oh, I have Type 2 and Type 4 for sure.”

And nothing will happen.

Not because you’re lazy. Not because you don’t want it. Because knowing you have an offer and building it are completely different skills.

Knowing is the easy part. A 3-minute conversation can reveal your invisible offer. I’ve done it hundreds of times. The person always has the same reaction: “Oh. That’s so obvious. Why didn’t I see that?”

Building it is where people get stuck.

How do I package it? What format should it be? How do I price it? How do I write the sales page? What do I say in the email? How do I launch without looking desperate? What if nobody buys?

Those questions are the reason your invisible offer stays invisible.

And that’s exactly what I’m solving tomorrow.

Tomorrow: Your First $1K After Corporate

I’m running a live workshop tomorrow. 60 minutes.

In the first 10 minutes, I’ll help you find your invisible offer. The actual skill hiding inside your career that people will pay for.

Then, I’ll show you exactly how to build it. The format. The pricing. The 90-day sprint from zero to $1K. Week by week. No guessing.

If you’ve read this far and you recognise yourself in one of those 5 types but you don’t know what to do next — that’s the workshop.

→ Join me tomorrow

60 minutes. Live + replay. The system I used to build a 7-figure business from the same skills that used to earn me a salary.

Now. Below, I’m sharing the implementation.

Not theory. The actual exercises, templates, and scripts you’d need to validate your invisible offer this week.

Here’s what’s available next for members:

→ The 15-Minute Skill Audit — the exact exercise I use with students to identify their #1 monetisable skill. 6 questions. By question 4, most people know their offer.

→ The Offer Packaging Template — how to take a raw skill and turn it into a product with a name, a price, a description, and a one-sentence pitch. Fill in the blanks. Done in 20 minutes.

→ The 48-Hour Validation Script — the exact DM I send (and teach my students to send) to validate an offer before building anything. 5 messages. 48 hours. You’ll know if people will pay before you spend a single hour creating.

→ The Price Finder Calculator — the framework for choosing a price that doesn’t make you cringe. Not “charge what you’re worth” motivation. Actual math. Your outcome × your multiplier = your price.

→ The “One Paragraph” Sales Page — the minimum viable sales page that converts. Not a 3,000-word landing page. One paragraph, one price, one link. This is how my students launch in days, not months.

If you’ve ever wanted to stop wondering “what would I even sell” and start knowing — this is the toolkit.
